I also consider in-laws who were veterans (and especially died in service) as belonging to "our family" - even if he/she had no children with our family member.
Besides, the additional info enriches the family story, such as "He was a Greyhound bus driver for 40 years and received an award for 1,000,000 miles without an accident". It might once in awhile give more clues about other relationships within the family, where people might have lived, etc.
In short, I think the info is a valuable addition. I admit that it doesn't have any relevance to he and spouse's descendants (because they had none), but is still part of the family story.
