Re: Documenting a different Fact

I personally use the Departure Fact only for departures via ship. I record "removals" from one residence to another by simply entering a new Residence fact with the date of the removal and enter an explanation, if I have one. For example,

10/31/1882
Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, USA
Son Jason showing born KS in census in 1802, family moved fr OH by then"

or in your case:

Residence
05/31/1862
xxx, xxx, KY, USA
"Father, Sam & Joe moved to xxx to seek refuge after father killed Union Army officer"

I normally don't record the removal "from", but just the removal "to" - but one could in some cases record both.

Another scenario:

06/30/1870
Buffalo, Cloud, KS
Filed Homestead on this date - family diary indicates family returned to Pottawatomie that winter because of Indian troubles, Mary born there, and family returned to the farm the next spring.

Or.. I could have a separate residence fact for each of those events - ie move to Pottawatome and return the next year.

If I understand you correctly, your relative - who killed the Union Officer, was not in the Army, ie he was a civilian who killed a Union Officer? Did I understand that right?

In that case, I wouldn't use a Military fact. You could create a custom fact for "crimes" or some such title - or just leave it in the Residence fact and in your bio-sketch in your notes.

For the record, I use the following Military facts - most are custom:

Military Filter Description: (War, which side - if a question - I always use Union or Confederate for Civil War - Family Line, Survived (or Casualty)
Military War - Description: Name of war
Military service - at least two - date of enlistment and discharge - maybe more for noteworthy events.
Military Pension - For recording apps for pensions by the veteran, his widow or dependents, which could be years after he died. I enter the app # and the Cert # and widow or dependent's name.
Military Casualty - yes or no - details if any
Military Prisoner - yes or no - details if any
Military Serial Number

I use the Military Filter because I have so many veterans in my file in each of our wars since the 1630s, that I found devising "multiple-step" filters pretty hard to do, ie filter please give me a dataset of all Smith descendants who did not survive the Civil War that fought for the Union" - so I devised a Custom Fact which I use specifically for filtering ie "Civil War Union Smith Casualty".

I have some folks, especially in the Civil War multiple Military Service Facts for multiple enlistments, different engagements or battles they were in, etc. I have found that a man in the service for the full three years was usually in a lot of battles, so I don't put every one.
