FTM 2011 or FTM 2012 as a stand-alone (NO SYNC) computer software package is fine.
But the bugs now in FTM 2012 might overwhelm novice users.
Perhaps FTM 2013 will have the sync feature more refined.
A novice should start as we all started - just creating a tree. The ins and outs of "sync" and "online vs desktop" - are not things a newbie needs to deal with.
I managed to bring FTM 2012 to a total halt, simply by deleting a marriage fact. The FTM error message told me to forget things and start again. So I did. But thats not what a novice needs to be put through.
