Re: Orange Sync' Warning

No, it's not just you! Ancestry are doing maintenance work and upgrading servers, which will (hopefully) resolve the situation, by 31st May they claim. They've recently (and rather belatedly) updated the warning you get when you try to sync, which now says "[...] Ancestry is currently performing maintenance that can impact features such as sync" and a link to https://support.mackiev.com/724174-Ancestry-Issues-and-FTM-2... which explains the situation in more detail.

I used to get greens at least in the morning (UK time), but it does seem to be pretty much continuously orange at the moment, with not infrequent reds as well. I have been syncing on orange on occasion, with no problems so far, but of course you do so "at your own risk", even with a backup first. It's not made clear WHEN you might want to restore that backup either - always after a sync crash (which fortunately I've never had)? if the alert is orange after you synced? or simply when you're suspicious something went wrong?

I have to say I don't have any faith in the much touted "Weather alert". As far as I'm aware, it's purely an indication of recent (un-)reliability of the connection, not any form of forecast, and as such, provides no guarantee that a sync won't fail even if it's green when you start. The fact that you can have a green and rather childish "perfect syncing weather today!" message straight after hours of orange and even red alerts, doesn't inspire me with much confidence. The time on the message is also misleading - it suggests it's a specifically date-stamped message, but in fact it's simply the current system date and time (unhelpfully in UTAH time, with UTC as a grudging concession to non-US users), so serves no useful purpose at all.

All in all, I think the weather alert is mainly designed to "scare" people off syncing when the servers are busy, to reduce the load, and to divert attention from the fact that the sync system really isn't very robust and can corrupt your data if it fails or is interrupted. You have to remember that the "Weather alert" never existed before and was only introduced by SMK because of serious issues with syncing during beta testing of FTM2017.

A sync system (and I've been involved in designing and implementing many over the years) should be solid and reliable, but always "fail-safe", with full automatic roll-back or roll-forward in the event of unavoidable interruptions like a network failure. Just having a message effectively saying "it might not work at the moment, so I wouldn't sync now if I were you, but take a backup anyway" is just plain amateurish, to be honest.

Sadly, I don't see any evidence that SMK (in collaboration with Ancestry) are really up to providing such a robust sync system, when they can't even fix simple bugs months or years after they've been reported, so I think we just have to live with it.
