The Master Genealogist is far more powerful than Family Tree Maker. Unfortunately, it comes with its own set of downsides. It's not as intuitive, the interface is quite dated, and the database (FoxPro) is ancient and is being retired by Microsoft. (On the other hand, the data can be dumped.) My personal feeling is that its approaching the end of its lifecycle, but in spite of all of these shortcomings, it is in a class of its own when it comes to functionality.
