Thank you for your help which has solved the problem.
Whether or not the problem ws caused by the "synch" function, it was definitely a FTM2012 software gremlin. I'm relieved that your help eliminated it.
The moral for all new FTM users is to first back up your online tree GEDCOM before synching for the first time.
