Unrelated Ancestry Hints

For the past couple of days I've been seeing Ancestry hints in FTM that aren't even remotely similar to the person that the leaf is displaying for. Is anybody else seeing this?

Yes, I've had the same on and off. I don't think they bother to maintain them very well, since I've often had orange warning messages claiming to be from "today" that have been timed for AFTER the time I've seen them, and have stayed unchanged for a few days, making you wonder if they're genuine or just one they've forgotten to remove. I'd much rather they had implemented a reliable fail-safe sync that would either work or not - this "proceed with caution" approach is really poor, effectively putting the blame on the user if something goes wrong, and expecting me to take backups before syncing every time I see an orange alert. It would also help if they always included a full date and time stamp in the messages. They also claimed that you shouldn't ever see the green message (a green sun?!) unless they were expecting problems or planning downtime, but I always get a message even if it's a green one, which is a nuisance. since I have to acknowledge it each time.

Not in FTM and not recently, but I have had that in Ancestry on and off over the years - just an occasional completely spurious hint. Similarly, I occasionally see titles on source images that are totally wrong. It always seems to cure itself if I try again later, so I suppose it's some transient glitch where their database gets out of sync - perhaps it's distributed between multiple servers, or maybe there's some sort of re-indexing and you just happen to catch the data mid-change if you're unlucky.

SYNC FTM 2017 and Ancestry

Anyone else having problems with this. My syncs are slow ... real slow ... slower than slow. Takes sometimes several hours.

Mine take perhaps 10 minutes at the outside.

Are you making changes in FTM or Ancestry or both?

In my experience, the sync takes far less time for changes made in Ancestry than for changes made in FTM. Making changes on both sides, in a single sync, is not recommended.

Mine used to be very quick, a few minutes if that, until I was switched to FTM 2017.

Thread is old, but the link I gave you is new. And Stefan has responded. He is never difficult to contact.

I've certainly seen other posts about very slow syncs, but in spite of my frustration with most aspects of FTM2017 being much slower [than FTM2014], I have to admit that syncing is relatively fast and reliable for me. If I make a change (or even quite a few), syncing for me takes only about 1 minute or less, regardless of whether the changes have been made in Ancestry or FTM or both. I haven't rigorously tested every type of change, but I've been doing all the usual adding new people, adding citations, editing descriptions, adding media etc., and none of them are any slower as far as I can tell. I do have a very fast fibre-optic broadband connection, but even a slow connection shouldn't be taking hours for a few changes. I've seen a post that suggested some sort of internal corruption in an FTM file was causing it, and after they followed MacKiev's advice to delete and re-download the tree from Ancestry (or possibly vice versa?) that fixed the problem. Beware of course that not everything is synced between the systems, so some data or attributes might be lost if you did do this (tasks, place name resolution , web links and colour coding being some that come to mind). Good luck!

Are you having it sync the citation media along with everything else? What effect does syncing and downloading all of the citation media images have on the amount of time it takes to sync?

Everything you said is/was correct. It was my mistake. I originally went to the website you indicated and for some reason I thought I would find the info I needed there --I didn't realize I was supposed to send an E-Mail to the support group at that website

I guess I am getting old and a little senile

I did contact Stephen and he/his support group sent me the info and it all worked perfectly. I tried the system and built a few books and got excellent results

Thank you Burgess and thank you Stephen

The source citation media continues to download, after the sync indicates it is complete, but even with 30-50 new citations, that only takes a few minutes. I'm currently on a slow DSL connection, and I'm not having an issue with the speed of sync.

When starting your sync, are you getting the Green of Orange weather report?

If orange, then that MAY be why your sync is slow.

Yes, I sync everything including all the citation media, and it still never takes more than a minute or two, even including the background media sync. Obviously the initial background sync that's part of a full download from scratch does take a long time, but that's just a one-off.

I was having a problem with very long syncs even after i had made only minor data changes, I found the problem to be that several pieces of very large media had become unlinked and for some reason where syncing from ftm to ancestry every time I synced. I suggest take a look at the synce log or report over a couple of syncs and see if you can identifiy any problem media. I fixed the broken links in ftm and solved my problem.

Could be, but as far as I'm concerned, I've never had a slow sync even when the alert is orange. To be honest I don't have much faith in the alert system - I've never had a problem syncing with an Orange alert, but I HAVE had failures or the dreaded "your online tree appears to have been deleted" message even without any sync alert. So unless it's red I just go ahead anyway, and assume that if there's a problem I'll restore a backup or re-sync.

Maybe that is my problem. I see some media has been transferred to the media file but not to the person. I will go through and see if I can manually "sync" my media. But still, in the 3 years I've been doing this, only having problems since 2017 FTM a few months ago.

Good Grief! Spend $40 on the current product.

Your windows 7 OS is a decent microsoft version but does expose you to more malware than 10 would.

Extended support for Windows 7, and therefore security fixes, continues until 14 Jan 2020. I haven't seen any evidence that Win7 is more vulnerable to malware than Win10, assuming automatic updates are not disabled.

I'm having the same problems, my last sync, which only updated 3 people took 5 hours! I'll look for media giving me trouble, but if that's the case then they need some kind of warning or something,
