Does anyone know why I cannot find Belgrade in FTM?
Thanks

I think the real problem is that "Serbia" does not appear in the list also.
The world is changing faster than the database can be updated.

First to answer your questions: holds unlimited people, OK for Windows 10, easy to install yes, software is OK subjectively.
However, I wouldn't waste my time on it. There have been numerous updates since this version. If you have the 2014 version there is a discounted 2017 version available from Mackiev with many, many improvements.

I think you are correct. Serbia has been around in its present form for some 10 years. The database still mentions Yugoslavia. Still not sure why I can't find Belgrade at all though? Perhaps it is time for an overhaul.

Detecting Duplicate Media

Is there a way to prevent the same "duplicates" that aren't really duplicates from being reported?

Just for everyone's benefit, are you talking about the media in your FTM tree gallery or your FTM family tree media folder?

Either. What I'd really like to do is find duplicate "anything" associated with a person. Ideally I'd like the same media to be linked to multiple people where appropriate.

I find the duplicate file finder available as a free download from :-
https://www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder/
a very handy tool. I run it from time to time on the FTM media folder to root out inadvertent duplicates. FTM will usually add a suffix if the file name already exists but this software will still find them and offer you the option to delete or retain.

Sample output illustrated below

I don't often have this info, so have put it in the description of the birth fact. I guess the benefit of adding it to birth notes is that you can chose later whether to add it to a report or chart. A con is that others may not know to look there and it gets lost, but then you could add it to the citation text.

When I type Belgrade, Serbia into the Location finder on the Places tab and press GO it displays the city of Belgrade, Serbia. I know almost nothing of the area. The map shows a Sava river flowing into a Dunav river (FTM spellings). There is a Great War Island where the two meet. Is this correct? I'm using the latest version of FTM.

Yes, I agree, it's time for an overhaul, but sadly I doubt it'll ever happen. I gather the master location database comes from a third party, and it's dreadfully out of date and hasn't been updated for years (15 years or more, I think I saw someone mention?) It's riddled with mistakes, omissions and inconsistencies, especially for UK (and perhaps other non-US) users. Unfortunately it's an encrypted DB3 file and to my knowledge no-one has yet worked out the key, which would at least allow us to update it externally (at our own risk of course, and knowing that any FTM update would probably overwrite it).

I know people say you can simply override it and enter locations as you wish, so what's the problem, but I find the hierarchical location arrangement and the Places workspace very useful for research and maintaining consistency - or at least it would be if it could be updated and fixed. Ideally MacKiev would release an update, but even being able to manually update it by a individual user who chose to, for their own benefit alone, would be a huge improvement - all MacKiev need to do is make the encryption key known, though I suspect they can't do that for licensing reasons.

It's potentially a really powerful tool in FTM that's largely wasted because of these problems, in my opinion.

That's strange, The only Belgrades I can find are in the USA and there is no Serbia.

I think jnye042 must be referring to the Location search in the central map panel, which is driven by Bing and is (confusingly) independent of FTM's own master location database as used by the places list in the left panel. Bing does know about Belgrade and Serbia, but FTM's database doesn't, only having Yugoslavia (and a Belgrad in Croatia, but that's a different, tiny town). The Bing map panel is usually more up-to-date, but I've seen instances where the opposite happens - FTM knows about a place but Bing doesn't (or shows the same name in a completely different location). All a bit of a mess really.
