Re: Vista to Windows 8

Depends on the version of FTM that you have?

Also depends on which version of Windows 8 and on what type of a machine.

The Surface Tablets that are running the RT version of Windows 8, FTM can NOT be installed. But a PC with "Real" Windows 8, yes, FTM 2010, 2011 and 2012 can be installed.
Be very carful as most of these machines come with the 64 bit version and a lot of the older programs, and hardware can not be used on them.

FTM has been a dog plagued with troubles since version 2008. While 2009 and 2010 showed some improvement, 2011 and 2012 have gone backwards. Development ignored the issues with 2011 and 2012 that were documented during initial testing.

Rankings come from cumulative software sales...

TMG (The Master Genealogist) is probably the most capable program for "large" files but is more complicated for the general FTM user.

What version of FTM do you have? FTM 2012 does not run well on my fast, "state of the art" Window$ 7 machine.

I have added photos from other users ancestry trees to my ancestry tree and synced them to my FTM2012. Now that I know more about what I am doing, I need to go into FTM and document where I got those pictures, since it does not appear that sync downloads any information about who submitted the media originally. All of this media is attached to people in my tree, not sources. I want to make sure that I know where I got all the media. Please share how you document this - I am hoping for several different ideas, so I can find one that works for me.
Thanks

Thank you. At least I know I'm not going crazy. I'm a bit concerned about upgrading to 2012. There aren't many "good" posts about upgrading. So not sure I'm going to bite the bullet, but thank you for the link! And the info!

Sean,

My system:

Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7601 SP 1 Build 7601
FTM 2012 21.0.0.723
IE 10.0.9200.16521

Okay. I followed all that you recommended in your post (reset IE to default and reset Internet Options personal settings).

Rebooted. Launched FTM in another user name to see if it might be personal settings, problem was still there. Logged off that name, returned to main screen name and launched FTM.

Got to thinking maybe it has to do with Chrome being my default browser. Or maybe it is an add-on or another program.

Removed a program I no longer use (Mendeley) from Control Panel > add/remove programs. While there I decided to remove the Ask toolbar and the Yahoo toolbar. Seems the Ask toolbar was present when I last launched IE and I must've missed un-checking the 'install Ask toolbar' with the last Java update.

Only had FTM and add/remove (control panel) running. Ask toolbar would not remove - received message that stated Chrome was still running. That was odd because I had exited Chrome. Checked task manager & found that Chrome indeed was still listed in active programs. Exited both Chrome and FTM. Removed the Ask and Yahoo toolbars.

Launched FTM - it is fine! I'll bet it was the Ask toolbar.

I've rebooted and problem has now disappeared.

Hooray!

Sending a virtual hug for the help.

Cindy

Nice!

I seem to remember that something common wants to install Ask toolbar by default... Maybe Acrobat Reader, or Java? I'll try installing it and see if I can bring on the error.

I think it's Adobe Flash Player that want's to install the Ask toolbar.

I hate those things!

It should be OK. I believe Windows 8 is less graphic intensive than Vista or Windows 7.

Another thing tested: backup, restore, re-link. Did not work, BTW.

last tech-support question to whether I did the steps of: exporting from FTM, importing to ancestry.com, then linking from ancestry.com to FTM (the export process apparently corrects a lot of errors -- why not real-time? I don't know). In any case, my option to "Upload to Ancestry.com" after the export, was greyed out -- stumping me from finishing the instructions they gave me.

Lovely. Just lovely...

I'm beginning to think they're in over their heads, a bunch of tier ONE support folks, when sometimes you need a tier TWO or THREE...

Making me start to question leaving my valuable family data on the site -- it's got to crater sometime when they allow so much "bad data" to be stored (duplicate facts, duplicate people, un-attached people, etc.).

I can understand that with auto-sync. However, since I'm on a slow connection, I disabled it and even work "off line" (satellite connection). So, I'm pretty sure it's (background) sync related...

OK flash tries to install the Google toolbar (and Google Chrome). Java tries to install Ask toolbar.

I installed Java on my system and left the checkbox to install Ask toolbar also. However the toolbar isn't showing up in IE and I still don't get the error. Maybe something in my config is preventing the toolbar from loading, not sure.

Anyway, if someone who is having the script error would follow the Ask Toolbar uninstall instructions & report back, we can see if maybe that's the secret:

After rebooting I got the Ask toolbar running, and started getting the script error on public member trees in FTM. I uninstalled Ask Toolbar and Ask Toolbar Updater in Control Panel, and the errors stopped.

Looks pretty clear that the errors are related to toolbars, Ask or perhaps others.

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! Came home from work and did what you said about the ask toolbar which was disabled in my add ons. Finally seen it in the remove programs and uninstalled it and NO MORE SCRIPT ERROR on the Family Tree pages. Why didn't Ancestry Support know that!!!!

After uninstalling the Ask Toolbar, I still got the same error. I noticed that I also had the Yahoo Toolbar program installed, so I uninstalled it and lo and behold -- no more scripts error message. Thanks to everyone!!

This was an interesting read made even more interesting by a successful resolution. Compliments to all participants.

Perhaps the OP might consider both amending the topic title and updating the OP to reflect the result so that interested viewers might be better and more easily informed as to the culprit(s) without having to read through an entire thread?

Michelle,
There is a lot of GOOD with using FTM 2012.
Yes, there is a lot of people that are having syncing issues with it, but some of us do not.

If you do have issues with the syncing, then don't use it, it is not required that one must sync their data.
